“Tawara, a new tower company in South Africa, was launched with a mission to provide mobile network operators, wireless communication providers, and clients with space on towers for hosting radio transmission and communications equipment, while also prioritizing environmental impact, sustainability, and social impact” says Michael Magambo, MD of Tawara.
As a tower company, Tawara recognizes the vital role it will play in enabling mobile network operators and wireless communication providers to expand their coverage and reach more people. Tawara understood that increasing access to mobile networks was crucial for driving digital inclusion and reducing the digital divide in South Africa. Hence, driving digital inclusion and reducing the cost of communications in South Africa remains core objectivesof the company.
“The company will also address the critical issue of power shortages and load shedding that South Africa was experiencing by providing innovative and sustainable Power as a Service solutions to its clients” adds Michael.
The company will a focus strongly on reducing the environmental impact of towers, promoting sustainable business practices, and having a positive social impact on the communities where its towers were located. Tawara’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its strategy of deploying renewable energy sources, green building materials, and sustainable landscaping practices around the tower sites. The company will also consistently look at reducing waste, conserving energy and water, and encouraging eco-friendly practices among its employees and clients and suppliers.
With close to 40% of the installed base of masts and towers in South Africa, Tawara will leverage economies of scale to expand coverage to underserved and under-capacitated areas in South Africa.
